Reflecting on how to research

My past few readings have focussed on going back to the drawing board and reining in my research techniques. The demand for intellectualising my studies and going into great depth is undeniable. However, where perhaps I have been reading practical material in past years with the intent of finding my research technique, I am now discovering that the intent doesn't necessarily have to come first.

Barbara Bolt's quote about understanding the world through handling resonated. It made me realise that intellectualising isn't solely based on research techniques similar to that of scientific study or similar academic works, but also to have a hands on approach and to come to realisations through elements of my practice. The reading made this more clear because they highlighted the attributes of art and design research and the fundamental difference practice as research can have.

The readings are also extremely helpful to give validation to the way arts research is conducted. Referencing such research will be important to give my work authentication. I will continue to read this material because case studies will further my ideas about specific approaches to my topic of interest. With these, in tandem with readings about my field, research methodologies and questions will arise without me stabbing in the dark to find them. This should result in a big difference in how I discover the right questions to ask and the right way to investigate them.
