Academic Poster Presentation

I am Gabriel Plant. Deciding to do research stemmed from undertaking my BA in animation at LAU. By living and breathing my practice inevitably leads to questions. Questions that can keep me up at night. My interests snowballed into wondering about sound and image accompaniment. Activities as menial as walking around observing the world, while listening to music, made me question cognition of such material, both individually and holistically. My motives have therefore been to understand sound and image accompaniment further, not only to satisfy me but to make genuine resonation in the viewers of my work. By gaining this further understanding, I hope to achieve a cognitive recognition of what I demonstrate, which my audience may not even understand themselves, but will find satisfying nonetheless.

Here are a few examples of my work which demonstrate the kind of field I am entering. I work mostly in 2D and have particular strength in the hand drawn. Many of my animated shorts feature frames drawn by hand. After production, I often take these drawings and exhibit them in chronological order, creating impressions of the motion and an appreciation for the time that goes into animating.

The subject matter for my projects often involves visual languages for performers, whether in an album cover or music video. When working with video as a medium, I tie in my knowledge of multi modal experience (using different ways to emphasise audiovisual synergy). This has led me to make projects from 5 minute music videos to zoetrope style animations on turntables called stroboscopic discs.

Despite my limited technological know how, I have picked up a few skills in 3D because creating spectacle for live performance also interests me. A small project I conducted involved projection mapping, a field which I am extremely keen to get to know further in my practices to create immersive environments of multi modal experience for audiences.
