Characters 1&2
Colour and B&W
Character 1: Protagonist
Many of the characters in Big Smoke conceal their identities. This was first imagined in my designs for the Protagonist. Working with a draft of a colour pallet, I have kept the grey tones for them to blend with the night time backgrounds. Doing light in reverse seemed a good aesthetic for the film because it gives a gloomy atmosphere but also emphasises the sounds within it, which are accented with colour. In his coloured rendition, I have chosen cold colours to start off the journey he goes on. This will develop as the film progresses and the creative atmosphere grows. More colours will be used to juxtapose with the originally cold world.
Character 2: DJ 1
Modelled after my favourite DJ, Sherelle, I have chosen vibrant colours. The DJ's represent rebellion and protest in the defence of creativity. Therefore, she will be adorned with psychedelic clothing. The sounds represented by visual features in the film, will also use the colours of the DJ characters to show their incitement of the protest.
Characters 3&4

Character 3: DJ 2
Alongside the vibrant colours of DJ 1, I gave DJ 2 some bright green colours. The textures etc. have not yet been decided so the crosshatching is a temporary look. The colours are to remind me of their connotations within colour theory. With this character, the electric green represents new life, but also elements like code, much like the connotations in The Matrix where green represents sickness in the world and digital attributes.
Character 4: Synth and Light Operator
This mysterious character has their back turned for most of their screen time and doesn't have much colour. What I hope to represent with their actions is the vibrancy they create, rather than in how they look. Their sole purpose in the film will be to twiddle with various electrical dials, triggering changes in sound and lighting. They will definitely be a tool for conveying the multi modal experience I wish to convey as an Ulterior feature of the film.
Characters 5&6
Colour and B&W
Character 5: Law Enforcement
Character 6: Politician
The beginning of the film marks the world created by the oppression of politicians and the enforcement of it by officials in law. Therefore the world and these characters will contain no colour, emphasising the monotone world they wish to create. Within the colour script, this should subconsciously show them as antagonists.
Notes:
- Initial colour ideas have been established for each character with thought about colour theory. These may change to fit in with the colours of the film in general.
