Study Task 4 - STORYBOARD AND SHORT ANIMATION

STORYBOARD & SHORT ANIMATION

For my short film I  have chosen to use the sci-fi genre. My initial storyboard shows the progression of my story and some basic directions as to any dialogue or camera movements in the film. I will proceed to make details of camera movements so I can easily map out the aesthetic of each scene. I also need to establish which medium I will use in each scene, as I intend to use more than one medium.
For the one second animation which will go into my film, I have used the aesthetic of circuit boards as a running theme of my film. Therefore the scene shows a wide shot view of city lights expanding over a landscape but the marks made to show the lights are supposed to resemble a circuit board. Throughout the scenes I make this will be an aesthetic of my film.

Study Task 3 - CHARACTER BOARDS

CHARACTER BOARDS

In the process of making my character turnarounds, I tried to keep it true to the Science Fiction genre by taking influence from films like Chappie by Neill Blomkamp. Therefore I've added an element of artificial intelligence to my protagonist. A challenge for this character was thinking of how to add emotional appeal. Where it clearly cannot have facial expressions I will have to communicate emotional responses through the character's body language. I have somewhat done this through the neck movements where the head will be held high in a position of power and lower in an undermined position. However I think I will need to find other ways to create appeal for the character.
My intentions for the Antagonist were to create a generic looking person where I have applied a military boiler suit. This is to represent him as the human race as a whole which I think works quite well.

TRIANGULATION

TRIANGULATION

When looking at how film makers would prioritise certain ways of animation, it is interesting to look at Wes Anderson's approach to his stop-motion feature films. A source says that 'Most baffling for the animators and puppet makers alike was Anderson’s insistence on naiveté... He instead wanted viewers to notice and embrace the medium of stop-motion itself.' Although the applications of animation have massively expanded in the 21st Century, Anderson would still choose to have an audience recognise stop-motion as a medium through small details like tiny jolts between frames or seeing the sets as something hand made. Another source somewhat agrees with this opinion, saying that 'traditional animation and computer animation should exist side by side.' This recognises the same ideals as Wes Anderson in believing that despite all the advancements in things like computer generated animation, the old methods used can have a better effect. This differs from Pixar's style of animation because they are very much pioneers in creating new and effective ways of animating. As This picture shows, Pixar's methods are so refined, they can computer generate each hair on a character. With these two different styles, the benefits of both exploring new ways of animation and using old techniques have their benefits. With these two different styles, the benefits of both exploring new ways of animation and using old techniques have their benefits.
